Heritage Nebraska

Heritage NebraskaHeritage Nebraska brings the new [to Nebraska] concept of a staffed statewide preservation organization responsible for advocacy, education, outreach, preservation and stewardship to a state that has never had more than a handful of preservationists uniting at any one time for a specific cause. Formally organized in June 2008, Heritage Nebraska continues the preservation –based economic development work of the highly successful 15-year-old Nebraska Main Street program.

Without a dedicated statewide preservation organization, many preservation projects have suffered for a lack of trained personnel or coordinated effort to address the problems. Sadly, a countless number of historic properties have been allowed to deteriorate or disappear and a number of cultural opportunities have been overlooked. The state’s preservation needs are great; the opportunities are not readily recognized. Heritage Nebraska is changing that through collaborations with the State Historic Preservation Office, the University of Nebraska, the state Departments of Roads and Economic Development, the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Mountains/Plains Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation to promote advocacy, education and outreach.
