2011 Heritage Nebraska Main Street Award Winners Announced

Heritage Nebraska Main Street recognized the best downtown revitalization projects of 2010-2011 at the Heritage Nebraska Annual Awards dinner on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Chances R in York, Nebraska.

"The work of Nebraska Main Street communities is impressive and are illustrated through the people and the projects that are being honored tonight," said J.L. Schmidt, Executive Director of Heritage Nebraska. "I congratulate the great volunteers and staff of each and every Main Street program in Nebraska for the hard work that they put in to make it happen."

The Heritage Nebraska Main Street program targets Nebraska's historic commercial districts. Staff members provide technical support and training to designated communities that have made the commitment to revitalizing their downtown commercial districts using a comprehensive strategy based on historic preservation and utilizing authentic community character for economic development.

Main Street communities include Alliance, Beatrice, Elkhorn, Falls City, Fremont, Geneva, Grand Island, Kearney, Nebraska City, Plattsmouth, Sidney, Wayne and York. Bassett, Hastings, Lexington, Minden, Norfolk, and Polk County participate in the Associate Member program.

The 2011 award recipients are:

Monthly Reporting: The Main Street programs in Alliance, Beatrice, Plattsmouth, Sidney, Wayne and York were recognized for consistently meeting the monthly reporting deadline.

1,000+ Annual Volunteer Hours: The Main Street programs in Beatrice, Fremont, Grand Island, Nebraska City and Plattsmouth were recognized for exceeding 1,000 volunteer hours during 2010-2011.

National Main Street Accreditation: Main Street Beatrice, Main Street Falls City, Plattsmouth Main Street Association, Historic Downtown Sidney and Main Street Wayne were recognized for achieving National Accreditation from the National Trust Main Street Center.

Public Partner: The City of Sidney's Certified Local Government Program (CLG) was recognized with the Award of Excellence for their partnership with Historic Downtown Sidney on several projects in their Main Street district. Honored Recognition was given to the City of Falls City and the City of Nebraska City.
Corporate Partner: eXmark Manufacturing Company of Beatrice was recognized with the Award of Excellence for its partnership with Main Street Beatrice for the Charles Park Renovation Project.

Fundraising Project: Main Street of Fremont was recognized with the Award of Excellence for their Harlem Wizards Fundraiser. Honored Recognition was given to the 5th Street Festival co-produced by Main Street Beatrice and the Main Street Placemat Project in Plattsmouth.

Innovative Leadership or Management: Citizen's for Safe Streets & Sidewalks, a coalition of community members in Plattsmouth were recognized with the Award of Excellence for their efforts in getting a local bond issue passed that would pay for improvements to streets and sidewalks communitywide including downtown in the Main Street district.

Communication, Marketing and Image: Honored Recognition was given to Main Street Beatrice for their monthly newsletter, Main Street Falls City for their Facebook page, and Plattsmouth Main Street Association for their newspaper column.

Retail Event: Honored Recognition was given to Main Street Beatrice for the Chocolate Lovers Shopping Day Extravaganza.

Special Event or Festival: Main Street Wayne was recognized with the Award of Excellence for the Wayne State College Student Welcome Dance. Honored Recognition was given to Main Street Falls City for their Harvest Festival and York Towne Centre Main Street for the York College Night in downtown York.

Business Recruitment, Retention or Support Program: Main Street Wayne was recognized with the Award of Excellence for their Downtown Revolving Loan Fund. Honored Recognition was given to Main Street Beatrice for their Business Coaching program.

Façade Improvement Under $10,000: Honored Recognition was given to the Service Master façade project in York.

Façade Improvement Over $10,000: The Award of Excellence was given to the Historic First State Bank façade project in Sidney. Honored Recognition was given to Peck Properties/Cy North for a façade renovation in York.

Streetscape Project Under $50,000: Awards of Excellence were given to Main Street Beatrice for the Charles Park Renovation Project and to Main Street Wayne for their Holiday Pots and Greenery Project.

Window Display: Hometown Floral and Gifts in downtown Falls City received the Award of Excellence for their outstanding and creative window displays. Honored Recognition was given to Rohan Photography in downtown Plattsmouth, Nana's This & That in downtown Wayne, and Western Edge in downtown York.

Interior Improvement Commercial: Memory Lane in downtown Falls City received the Award of Excellence for their outstanding interior rehabilitation. River House Soda Fountain & Café in downtown Plattsmouth and Historic First State Bank in downtown Sidney received Honored Recognition.

Interior Improvement Residential: The Historic First State Bank project in downtown Sidney received the Award of Excellence for interior improvement of a residential space. The Grand Weaver Apartments in downtown Falls City received Honored Recognition.
Historic Preservation or Adaptive Reuse Project: Project Majestic in downtown Wayne received the Award of Excellence for the rehabilitation of Wayne's downtown movie theater.
