Heritage Nebraska Seeking Hidden Treasures, Fading Places and Destination Nominees

April 5, 2012

Heritage Nebraska has launched a statewide search for Nebraska's most outstanding Hidden Treasures, Fading Places and Destination Places.

"Nebraska has an abundance of places where history lives and, sadly, a number of fading places, too," said Gene O. Morris, chairman of Heritage Nebraska's 2012 program to recognize Hidden Treasures, Fading Places and Destination Places.  "With this statewide announcement we are asking all Nebraskans to join us in looking for special places for recognition," Morris said.

What the Heritage Nebraska Judges are Seeking

For HIDDEN TREASURES, the selection panel is looking for special places which don't receive much recognition, but are worthy of seeking out. The Hidden Treasures span a wide spectrum, including historic architecture, unusual landscapes and dynamic downtowns. They are special places, but more people need to know about them.

FADING PLACES are a different story. They are fading places faced with continued neglect or demolition. They deserve a second chance; a shot at being preserved or saved through creative re-use.

DESTINATION PLACES are a new category this year. They are museums and historic sites which tell the story of Nebraska history. What judges want to know is how the museum or historic site makes the facility attractive to tourists.
